Tillandsia capitata is a species native to Mexico, Guatemala, Cuba and the Dominican Republic. It grows epiphytically and sometimes saxicolous at 800-1000 meters of altitude. It is an extremely variable species in shapes varying in sizes and colors and of which different cultivars have been registered. Tillandsia capitata 'Red' is a Tillandsia capitata cultivar that stands out for its reddish leaves throughout the year if exposed to good light. The red color is accentuated especially in the center of the plant during the flowering season. Tubular lilac flowers.
